To finish off our program with The Green Team, we put together goodie bags for the kids to take home. The bags that the students repurposed from old Earth Week shirts were filled with some candy (their favorite), a final activity book full of sustainability oriented coloring pages and word searches, and a water bottle with bird seed for them to be able to make and fill their own bird feeders at home.
Looking back, moving forward |
I am so grateful for this opportunity to be able to connect more with my community. As well as this, I am so happy I was able to work with a younger population, and help to empower them in their own sustainable practices. Kids are often left out of sustainability education as it is assumed that it is too complex of a topic for them to comprehend or enjoy, but this perception could not be more wrong. Kids are passionate about taking care of their communities we just have to ensure that we are giving them the tools to make change applicable in their own lives and the education to empower them.
I believe this experience has been extremely beneficial in my development as a scholar. I have learned a lot about interdisciplinary education, how to be a leader for younger populations, and how to develop practical application of knowledge. My passion for strengthening our community continues, and I am excited to be able to use these new found tools to be able to work with different populations in community building. Sustainable community development is necessary in ensuring that marginalized populations are receiving the support and reinforcement that they need to flourish alongside our environment. Being able to combine both sustainability education and community empowerment into our project has given me so many valuable experiences that I am excited to take forward with me in my work as a scholar and an active community member. I love my community and the work we do. |
